The Pacific Ocean surrounding Hawaii Islands, in particular Oahu, is full of coral reefs and sand bottoms teeming with with sea life including all kinds of tropical fish, Star Fish, Octopus, Green Back and Leatherback Sea Turtles, Hawaiian Monk Seals, Spinner Dolphins, Manta Rays, Whitetip Reef Sharks, Moray Eels and during the winter months, December through May, more than 100,000 Humpback Whales (kohola in Hawaiian) migrate to Hawaii breed and give birth to their calves before they return back to the Gulf of Alaska to feed.

For very experienced scuba divers there are plenty lava tubes, underwater caves, planes and ship wrecks left over from WWII that are waiting for you come explore them and discover what lies beneath Hawaii’s oceans of crystal clear, deep blue water just off the coast of Oahu.

The ocean visibility it great. The water is warm. And there are a multitude of shallow dives, deep dives, and drifting current dives where you fly like superman over, underneath and through the coral reefs surrounding the island.

Most people bring an underwater GoPro camera, but many don’t bring a light. Once you’ve been night diving once, you’ll wonder why the colors are so brilliant at night. Experienced divers will confirm that bringing a little extra light, even on shallow day dives, will add a significant amount of color to both your videos and the overall scuba diving experience.  The extra light will help your eyes and the camera lens process more color.

Laniakea Beach on Oahu’s North Shore is a haven for green sea turtles. That’s how it got the nickname “Turtle Beach.” It is not uncommon to find green sea turtles swimming in and around reefs in many places around Oahu, but at Turtle Beach, the animals come out of the water and make the sandy beach their own point of rest and refuge.

Sea turtles, also known as “Honu,” are some of the most beautiful and fun marine life creatures in the ocean. You’ll definitely want to see them while on your Hawaiian vacation in Oahu, so pack your snorkel, waterproof camera, and eco friendly sunscreen and get out there and enjoy the sights of these green Honu beauties!

Be careful. Don’t confuse Turtle Bay with Laniakea Beach. Turtle Bay is a resort on the north shore of Oahu. Sometimes you can see turtles there, but on Laniakea Beach, commonly known as Turtle Beach, is the place where the turtles really like to go to take a break from swimming and feeding to get some rest and bask in the warm sunshine.

When the surf is low, the turtles haul themselves out of the ocean and find a spot on the sand to warm up. Turtles are reptiles and like to warm their bodies with external heat sources, in this case the sun. The surf on the North Shore is much quieter during summer, so your chance of finding basking turtles increases.
