Kahuku ( is a small town on Oahu’s northeastern coast, between Laie and Turtle Bay. Even though you can hardly find it on a map, there are still things to do here.

Like shrimp? Then Kahuku is the place to go. Here you’ll find numerous shrimp trucks parked alongside the main street (Kamehameha Highway) that runs through the town. There are several shrimp farms that raise the shrimp right there.

One of the most popular is Giovanni’s. You can’t miss the old white truck right next to the road. Their shrimp tastes great and you can choose from three different flavors – scampi (with garlic), with lemon and butter, or spicy.

In the Hawaiian language, Kahuku means “the projection,” which most probably refers to nearby Kahuku Point, the northernmost point of the island of Oahu. Kahuku Beach is popular among fishermen, but not a good swimming beach because of a long limestone shelf and rocky ocean bottom that makes entering the ocean difficult. The beach is backed by the Kahuku Golf Course.

Hana continues to be lag lazily behind the tempo of modernity and everyone in Hana is perfectly ok with the laid back lifestyle. It is often called Hawaii’s most Hawaiian town.

The road to Hana is notoriously twisting, turning and narrow, but driving slow allows everyone on the ride to enjoy the luscious tropical rain forest and numerous waterfalls along the way. It is one of the earth’s rainiest coasts.

Hana’s remote, wild, low-cliffed volcanic coastline and black sandy beaches offer solitude and a much needed relief from busy urban lifestyle.

But remember, black absorbs heat very well and if you walk across a black sand beach on a 90-degree afternoon when the sun is shining bright, you will wish you were wearing water socks.

Hana offers lodging, camping, picnicking, shore fishing and hardy family hiking adventures along the ancient Hawaiian coastal trail.

Laniakea Beach on Oahu’s North Shore is a haven for green sea turtles. That’s how it got the nickname “Turtle Beach.” It is not uncommon to find green sea turtles swimming in and around reefs in many places around Oahu, but at Turtle Beach, the animals come out of the water and make the sandy beach their own point of rest and refuge.

Sea turtles, also known as “Honu,” are some of the most beautiful and fun marine life creatures in the ocean. You’ll definitely want to see them while on your Hawaiian vacation in Oahu, so pack your snorkel, waterproof camera, and eco friendly sunscreen and get out there and enjoy the sights of these green Honu beauties!

Be careful. Don’t confuse Turtle Bay with Laniakea Beach. Turtle Bay is a resort on the north shore of Oahu. Sometimes you can see turtles there, but on Laniakea Beach, commonly known as Turtle Beach, is the place where the turtles really like to go to take a break from swimming and feeding to get some rest and bask in the warm sunshine.

When the surf is low, the turtles haul themselves out of the ocean and find a spot on the sand to warm up. Turtles are reptiles and like to warm their bodies with external heat sources, in this case the sun. The surf on the North Shore is much quieter during summer, so your chance of finding basking turtles increases.

Ala Moana Beach Park is a free public park on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. This 100-acre park has a wide gold-sand beach that is over a half-mile long. It is a man-made beach and was created by the owner of the Dillingham Dredging Company, who was looking for a place to dispose of his dredged sand, which was dumped at location  in the 1950’s, thus creating the the Ala Moana Beach.

The water is almost always calm because the beach is protected by an outer reef. This makes it a good spot for long-distance swimmers and small children. There is a 25-foot-deep swimming channel and a former boat channel that was dredged out of the reef.

Ala Moana’s ocean bottom drops quickly, so novice swimmers should use caution. Big grassy areas, banyans and palm trees make the park a good place to picnic, barbecue, play all kinds of ball games or go running. There are lifeguards, showers, restrooms, phones, tennis courts, picnic tables, food concessions and a music pavilion. Ala Moana Beach Park is a favorite among Honolulu residents. It is right next to “Magic Island” where many cultural events are held.
